Caffeine Guide to the World – Day 1

This week, I’m posting a series of “guides” each day to various coffee drinks and caffeinated beverages around the world. If you’re addicted to that morning jolt (I totally am) and to travel, this series will feature a handful of countries each day and a profile on their signature red-eye concoctions.

My favorite refreshments are water, beer and coffee. When traveling, clean water can usually be found (or made) one way or another and beer is always an enjoyable thirst-quencher – a great way to understand local culture. But coffee, good coffee, is not always easy to come by. Each country has a different interpretation of caffeine but below is a great article from MSNBC.com’s Itineraries called A Caffeine Addict’s Guide to the World. Here’s the skinny for today:

Italy: Espresso
It should have a thick crema layer on top and you should drink it like a shot of vodka – one gulp… while standing, of course. You have to get the full experience.

Austria: Melange
Just like a cappuccino (espresso, milk, foam and whipped cream) and served with water so you cleanse your palette in between sips.

Ethiopia: Buna
This is where coffee was “invented” and true to its roots, it’s served with salt and butter instead of sugar and milk.

Mexico: Café de Olla
This is a pre-sweetened beverage brewed with spices – cinnamon sticks and dark brown sugar.

Saudi Arabia: Kahwa
In traditional coffee shops (where women aren’t allowed – don’t get me started), you’ll find this bitter brew, infused with cardamom and served with sweet snacks. Ladies, if you want to enjoy this jolt, you’ll likely have to go to an upscale hotel in the capital.

10 Extreme Adventures!

Back in September, MSNBC Travel did an article on 10 extreme adventures – everything from shark bating to helicopter safaris! How many of these crazy vacations would YOU take?

10 Extreme Adventures:

  1. Go shark-bating (we don’t support this one*)
  2. Dive in an exosuit
  3. Go drag racing
  4. Take a helicopter safari
  5. Rescue training school
  6. Bulldoze something
  7. Go street-luging
  8. Drive a tank
  9. Try stunt training
  10. Fly a MiG over Russia

Go street-luging!

Take a helicopter safari!

*After researching some pictures to accompany MSNBC’s list, we were really turned off by shark-bating. We learned that there are some French Islander fishing techniques that use live dogs as bait – the pictures are very sad and we do not support these practices. What are your thoughts?

Travel Tip Tuesdays are Back!

Travel Tip for today: Sightseeing

If you’re like us, then you probably enjoy visiting tourist sites every now and again. Whether it’s for the pictures, the experience or the bragging rights to say, “I’ve been there!”, tourist traps can be lots of fun – if only they didn’t have so many…. tourists! Here’s a tip: Go during lunch. Most tour companies (you know, those ones with the large groups of loud people all wearing the matching hats) will take a break from their touring for lunch and it will give you the perfect chance to see the site(s) up close or to snag the coveted photo op without everyone else in your way.

Happy sightseeing!

Travel Tip Tuesday!

Travel tip #15: When traveling long distance in countries that offer trains or high speed rail systems, consider traveling at NIGHT. This way, you do not lose a day of sight-seeing AND you save on the cost of a hotel/hostel for that night. The same tip can be applied to flights, too. When we fly long distance, we try to book red eye flights so we’re able to maximize our time at our destination.

AWESOME Travel Photography by Kenneth Parker

We stumbled on Kenneth Parker’s photography site yesterday. His photographs are AMAZING. If you enjoy travel, nature and landscape photography, you’ll definitely want to check out his site: www.kennethparker.com! As a [much less experienced] travel photographer myself, I am truly inspired by his work and what he’s able to capture. It’s just awesome!

Paracord Watch

It’s been a busy morning here at Top Knotch Gear! We just re-vamped an old Swiss Army watch for September’s brother who’s traveling to Kenya next week. We gave the watch an OD Green paracord band with a side release buckle. Pretty cool!
