Travel Tip Tuesday!

Travel, be it a family vacation, business trip or RTW adventure, has gone digital. Between the internet cafés (which are quickly becoming a thing of the past), 4G and matchbook-sized travel devices, there are plenty of gizmos to keep you constantly connected to the rest of the world on the other side of cyberspace. Mobile apps like Facebook and Instagram are some of the most common – seriously, who doesn’t use them? But have you heard of some of these others? Below is a [truncated] list of the “Ultimate Travel Apps” – a list compiled by CNNGo. I’ve summarized 5 apps that I’d splurge on. To view the whole list, click here.

1) UNESCO World Heritage Location Guide – Over 900 sites all over the world to browse from, this is a great app for those travelers looking for something on the road less traveled. (Don’t worry, all the famous sites are on there, too.)

2) mTrip – Great for big cities in Asia (i.e.: Bangkok, Hong Kong… all my faves). It tells you what places you’d enjoy visiting (based on preferences you enter once downloaded) and even lets you send virtual postcards to friends and family! I am a sucker for postcards – physical or digital – so I think this one is perfect.

3) Trip Advisor – As small business owners, Trip Advisor is some of the best word-of-mouth advertising we could ask for. Whenever we go on trips (even if it’s just a of couple hours away), we’ll hit up this site for activities, things to do and hotel recommendations. NOTE: In my experience, this site has only been beneficial for places in the U.S. (If you want to check out our business on Trip Advisor, just click here!)

4) Tripline – This app lets you document your trip with pictures, notes and a mapped timeline of everywhere you’ve been. You can check in at various places on your journey just by snapping a photo! Then return home and replay your adventures at your next family function.

5) EveryTrail – Perfect for nature freaks and hiking junkies, this app lets you find trips and trails nearest you, allows you to map your route with the phone’s GPS and even find other hikers in your area. You can view stats (like elevation and distance), see pictures of what’s around the bend and search tons of other trips that fellow nature nuts have taken.

Last tip: Make sure you’ll actually be able to use your smartphone or mobile device where you’re traveling. Just because you have lightning-speed service doesn’t mean you’ll be able to catch a signal in all corners of the globe.

Safe travels!

Travel Tip Tuesday!

Today’s tip comes a little late but is very valuable. The tip: Date a girl who travels! Aleah, the Solitary Wander, is a solo traveler who has all kinds of adventures and words of wisdom. Her latest post is about all the reasons why girls who travel make great partners. They are special because of their unique travel experiences, the misadventures they have run into while traveling and their humility they have developed from seeing and experiencing the world.

READ THE WHOLE POST HERE!!! It’s awesome. And it will make your heart flutter for that special someone.

Internet Censorship in the United States

Below is a screen shot I took of WordPress.com yesterday (1/19/12) as they boycotted the SOPA & PIPA bills that would allow internet censorship. Learn more about the bills here.

RELOCATING to Florida!

Top Knotch Gear is relocating to Florida! We will be leaving southeast Michigan next week to move to St. Petersburg, Florida for a new adventure….

We're moving!

September’s family has purchased a beachside business on Treasure Island (about 15 minutes outside of St. Pete) called Beach Snoballs! It’s a New Orleans-based business that sells frozen desserts called Snoballs. Snoballs, for those who are unfamiliar, are finely shaved ice treats that are super soft and shaved right off of the ice block, fresh every day (it’s so soft, it’s like eating velvet). All of the syrups at Beach Snoballs are natural, preservative-free and made on-site so beach-goers on the Gulf can have a healthy, low-calorie treat on those hot summer days. If you’re in the St. Pete/Tampa/Treasure Island area, stop by to say hi and check us out! And be sure to bookmark the website because we’ll be updating it often with new info, store updates, contests, photos and Snoballs coupons!

Our new business! Beach Snoballs!

We’ll continue to make our paracord gear but from our new location! We will be putting TKG and Top Knotch Travels on a small ‘vacation’ (read: hiatus) starting June 15th until we get settled in our new, sunny home. Please make any purchases as soon as possible and before the 15th so we can get your gear in the mail before we leave.

TKG will be on a brief vacation starting June 15th. Please make any purchases before then.

We love adventures!

24 Lesson’s I’ve Learned in 24 Years

Today is my (Morgan’s) 24th birthday! And instead of writing a post about my favorite birthday memories (like the time when I turned 4 and I rejected my grandparents’ birthday presents because I ‘didn’t order them’ or the time when I turned 21, bar-hopped all evening and failed my chemistry final exam the next morning, having to retake chem in summer school), I made a list of 24 lessons I have learned in my 24 years of life. It’s quite a fun and rather insightful exercise if you’ve never done it before! So here goes:
  1. Things happen for a reason. These reasons may not become apparent for years but there are always reasons for everything.
  2. The human body is the most amazing machine in the world. The things it can do are absolutely incredible.
  3. Enjoy the first snow – even though it usually means 6 more months of winter in Michigan, the first snow is without a doubt, beautiful.
  4. Sometimes our best just isn’t good enough but it makes us stronger and more courageous when we have tried our hardest.
  5. Travel changes your world perspective forever and it continues to evolve during each trip you take.
  6. Having a pet gives an energy to a space that nothing else can fill.
  7. Drink water.
  8. Explore unfamiliar places.
  9. Karma really does exist – in my experience.
  10. Sunshine makes everything in life better and happier.
  11. Go snorkeling. The world under the water’s surface is exquisite and everyone should see it in their lifetimes.
  12. Being in love ROCKS.
  13. Every family is quirky and dysfunctional in their own way but that’s what makes them so special.
  14. Photographs are great ways to capture moments – never hesitate to snap the shutter.
  15. Don’t force your system of beliefs onto other people. The world is so unique because everything believes different things. Plus, it makes for more interesting conversations with others.
  16. Recycle everything.
  17. Stand up for what you believe in – even if you’re standing alone.
  18. Love unconditionally.
  19. “If you think you can, you can. If you think you can’t, you can’t.” (Words of wisdom from my dad.)
  20. Communication makes life easier, less confusing and all around more enjoyable.
  21. Volunteer. Helping others in any capacity is awesome!
  22. Thai curry is one of the best foods on the planet.
  23. Travel light.
  24. There’s always next time…

Break dancing on a pier in Michigan. That's Lake Huron in the background.

Me (Morgan) at a football game my senior year in college - American football that is, not soccer.
