Travel Tip Tuesday!

Today’s tip comes a little late but is very valuable. The tip: Date a girl who travels! Aleah, the Solitary Wander, is a solo traveler who has all kinds of adventures and words of wisdom. Her latest post is about all the reasons why girls who travel make great partners. They are special because of their unique travel experiences, the misadventures they have run into while traveling and their humility they have developed from seeing and experiencing the world.

READ THE WHOLE POST HERE!!! It’s awesome. And it will make your heart flutter for that special someone.

Islands for Everyone!

As cabin fever sets in and winter blues hover in the air (unless you live in Florida, no winter blues here), why not take yourself on a tropical getaway? Say, to an island that’s perfect for your personality?! CNN Go has put together a list of islands that are perfect for all kinds of people – nudists, families, loners, lovers…. you name it. Here are some of the findings:

World’s Best Islands For…

Naughty Nudists
Rab, Croatia – The birthplace of skinny dipping where clothing is optional. There are 3 different nude beaches where all of your parts can get some Vitamin D.

Nature Nuts
Sark, Channel Islands – It’s here, off the French coast of Normandy, that you can see the Milky Way nearly every night. There are no street lights or headlights because cars and bright lights are outlawed – perfect for stargazing space freaks (like me)!

Family Frenzies
Oahu, Hawaii – I’ll admit, the thought of visiting an island where are bunch of kids are running around is a turnoff to me. But Oahu is a great destination for families because of all the activities to keep young ones entertained – things like surfing school, giant mazes and water slides.

Lusty Lovebirds
Lizard Island, Australia – Between the 24 private beaches, the torch-lit dinners at the resorts and the Great Barrier Reef, this island is sure to make sparks fly. I know it’s going on our itinerary…

Laid Back Loners
Ogasawara Island, Japan – Traveling solo isn’t a bad thing, especially if you enjoy the quiet of being one with nature. South of Tokyo, this island has few inhabitants and a ferry is the only means of connecting the island to the “real world”… otherwise, you’re on your own! (Bring your survival bracelet!)

Party Peeps
Ibiza, Spain – Yes, the same Ibiza that J-Lo sings about. Known for its sweaty summer raves, there are tons of clubs with head-throbbing trance music if you’re looking for a party scene-getaway.

Movie Star Madness
St. Barts, French West Indies – Pretty, posh and full of paparazzi, this is THE island for celeb sightings. It’s also a gorgeous place with white sand beaches, just like in the Hollywood movies.

Happy island-hopping!

Adventure

I’m not much of a rules-follower. I prefer to live life by my own set of instructions and work at my own pace (usually a fast pace without reading any directions). In high school (I went to boarding school for 3 years), I dated the director of my dorm. It was a major breach in the code of ethics but I couldn’t help it. It was adventurous, I was in love and I was determined to get what I want. To make everything even more scandalous (in my parents eyes, anyway), my dorm director was a girl! (And yes, we’re still together 7 years later). In college, prerequisites were merely someone’s suggestions as to how to spend my money and credits, and I would acknowledge those suggestions and then quickly ignore them. Who has time to take math classes they don’t need? While everyone was thinking about summer internships, I decided it’d be fun to work for the Parks & Rec., usually cleaning up garbage and poop from the public restroom. So it’s no surprise (to me, anyway), that after graduating from a great university, while everyone else I knew was applying to med school or getting accepted into graduate school (and planning on actually using their undergraduate degrees), that I decided to plan a trip around the world with my best friend and partner. I get my jollies out of living life unconventionally.

My girlfriend September (yes, that’s her real name), and I don’t like to be held down. We tend to move apartments every year, change jobs often and if something big and crazy comes along, we’re usually game. I think of myself as adaptable, pretty willing to try new things (unless it’s weird food) and that nothing is permanent… so who’s up for an adventure?!

Our most recent adventure involved purchasing a shaved ice business on the Gulf side of Florida (in Treasure Island, about 10 minutes from St. Petersburg) with 2 other members of September’s family. Our lease in Michigan was about to expire and we were hesitant to renew. Ironically, I had quit my job at Home Depot about 4 weeks earlier and September was looking to leave her (very stable) job at a state university. The possibility of owning this shaved ice beach business couldn’t have come at a better time in our lives. Within a week, the family had purchased the business and settled on a closing date. Sep and I eagerly volunteered for the adventure of running the stand full time, thus packing up our lives, selling our stuff and making the 20-hour drive to our new home in Florida. We had absolutely no idea what we were doing or what we were getting into. It was the middle of the summer (the peak season for shaved ice in Florida) and we had never run a brick-and-mortar business before (we have an online business selling survival bracelets but that’s a different story). Sure, Sep has a MBA but she never planned on actually using it! And I have a degree in kinesiology, so my training would be worthless.

The first weeks were awful. We were more stressed than we had ever been in our lives and we often cried before bed. We worked 15-hour days, 7 days a week, with no end in sight. We kept reminding ourselves that this was an adventure (as I tattooed on my right foot a week before we moved – another thing my parents told me not to do) and we embrace the unknown. Then, after a month or so, we started to get the hang of new lives. It’s hard to complain about life when you work across from the Gulf of Mexico, when you can watch the sunset every night or have citrus trees growing right in your own yard with built in breakfast. Besides, I remind September, we’re really close to Cuba now… and while it’s illegal for Americans to go there, I really think we should try to find a way.

Packing & Getting Ready to Move!

For the past 3 weeks, we’ve gone through our belongings and started to pack up our life here in Michigan. It has been lots of work but we’re very excited for this new adventure!

The beginning of our pile of stuff to load into the car....

The pile has since grown and includes fun stuff like September's guitar, my Michigan beer bucket, a big boxTop Knotch stuff and.....

.... a mini keg of Oberon!

Bell’s Oberon is one of the best beers you can find here in Michigan. It’s brewed in Kalamazoo (the west side of the state) and is one of our absolute favorite beers. One of the most difficult things about saying bye to Michigan (there are quite a lot of things we’ll miss) is saying bye to a delicious brew like this one. Lucky for us, this mini keg will help us break in our new home in Florida and will be a little [and very good] taste of Michigan!

Check out the Bell’s Brewery website here!: http://www.bellsbeer.com/

24 Lesson’s I’ve Learned in 24 Years

Today is my (Morgan’s) 24th birthday! And instead of writing a post about my favorite birthday memories (like the time when I turned 4 and I rejected my grandparents’ birthday presents because I ‘didn’t order them’ or the time when I turned 21, bar-hopped all evening and failed my chemistry final exam the next morning, having to retake chem in summer school), I made a list of 24 lessons I have learned in my 24 years of life. It’s quite a fun and rather insightful exercise if you’ve never done it before! So here goes:
  1. Things happen for a reason. These reasons may not become apparent for years but there are always reasons for everything.
  2. The human body is the most amazing machine in the world. The things it can do are absolutely incredible.
  3. Enjoy the first snow – even though it usually means 6 more months of winter in Michigan, the first snow is without a doubt, beautiful.
  4. Sometimes our best just isn’t good enough but it makes us stronger and more courageous when we have tried our hardest.
  5. Travel changes your world perspective forever and it continues to evolve during each trip you take.
  6. Having a pet gives an energy to a space that nothing else can fill.
  7. Drink water.
  8. Explore unfamiliar places.
  9. Karma really does exist – in my experience.
  10. Sunshine makes everything in life better and happier.
  11. Go snorkeling. The world under the water’s surface is exquisite and everyone should see it in their lifetimes.
  12. Being in love ROCKS.
  13. Every family is quirky and dysfunctional in their own way but that’s what makes them so special.
  14. Photographs are great ways to capture moments – never hesitate to snap the shutter.
  15. Don’t force your system of beliefs onto other people. The world is so unique because everything believes different things. Plus, it makes for more interesting conversations with others.
  16. Recycle everything.
  17. Stand up for what you believe in – even if you’re standing alone.
  18. Love unconditionally.
  19. “If you think you can, you can. If you think you can’t, you can’t.” (Words of wisdom from my dad.)
  20. Communication makes life easier, less confusing and all around more enjoyable.
  21. Volunteer. Helping others in any capacity is awesome!
  22. Thai curry is one of the best foods on the planet.
  23. Travel light.
  24. There’s always next time…

Break dancing on a pier in Michigan. That's Lake Huron in the background.

Me (Morgan) at a football game my senior year in college - American football that is, not soccer.
