Coffee Guide – Day 4

Here’s to day 3 of my coffee guide around the world! Read MSNBC Itineraries’ article here.

Spain: Café Bombon
Espresso & condensed milk – usually in layers. Sounds pretty to look at but not my cup of tea…or coffee, rather.

Morocco: Café des Épices
Coffee mixed with a variety of Moroccan spices! Everything from cardamom to black pepper is mixed into the coffee, depending on the occasion (or mood of the brewer.)

France: Café au Lait
Coffee with LOTS of warm milk – usually for dunking baguettes. (I’d be more interested in the baguettes and breakfast pastries than the French coffee, but that’s just me.)

FinlandKaffeost
Pieces of reindeer- or cow-milk cheese in a cup of black coffee.  Who would have thought that coffee and reindeer cheese go well together?

Ireland: Irish Coffee
Yes, just like we know it here in the states: hot coffee, sugar, Irish whiskey and whipped cream – the morning pick-me-up for college students!

Classic Cuban Daiquiri

The weather’s getting warmer and summer is right around the corner. ‘Tis the season for relaxing, getting a tan and drinking tasty summer cocktails.

When I was in college, one of my favorite places to dine in Ann Arbor was at Café Habana. (Not that I went out to eat much – I was, after all, a poor college student. But when I felt like treating myself, Habana was my first choice.) While they only had 2 dishes on the menu that were vegetarian (both were delicious, though), I would trot down the street to indulge in their classic Cuban Daiquiris. With only 3 ingredients, this drink is quick, easy and absolutely divine!

The Cuban Daiquiri

  • 3 oz. white rum (preferably Cuban)
  • Juice from 1 lime
  • 2 tablespoons of white sugar (you can add more/less as desired)
Mix all ingredients, shake with ice and drink up! You can even garnish your martini glass with a sugar rim and a lime twist if you’re feeling glitzy. (Just remember to drink responsibly.)

EASY Recipe – Indian Paneer

Do you like Indian food? Ever wish you could make restaurant-quality dishes right in your own abode? Try this super easy recipe for paneer – Indian cheese.

Ingredients:

-1 gallon of milk (any kind works – we use 2%)

-1 quart of buttermilk

-1 cup oil for frying (optional)

Directions:

Pour the gallon of milk into a large pot and bring to a boil. Be sure to keep stirring it so it doesn’t scald or boil over. When the milk starts boiling, stir in the butter milk in a constant stream. The milk will start to separate and the curds will form clumps. Drain the liquid – it helps to pour the curds through a cheesecloth (or a bandana, if you’re us) to drain and then place something heavy on top of the curds to press the remaining liquid out of the curds. Once drained, cut the curds into cubes. From here you can either refrigerate them until you’re ready to use them or you can fry them in a sauté pan for immediate use. To fry, put oil into a pan and turn heat on high. When oil is hot, drop cheese cubes in the pan and fry/sauté for approximately 5 minute or until golden brown. You can season the cheese with salt, curry powder or just leave them plain if you’re serving them in an Indian dish. YUM!

We promise it's cheese, not tofu.
