Florida’s Hidden Treasure

Just when we feel like we’re familiar with where we live and have developed a routine, this great state of Florida shows us what more there is to explore. With an abundance of bays, freshwater streams & rivers, the Gulf of Mexico and even the Atlantic Ocean, water sports here are endless. Kayaking is one of our favorite activities – a cooler of Yuengling, a bright blue sky and miles of quiet mangroves make the perfect retreat. But recently, we’ve discovered the majestic underwater world through snorkeling Florida’s natural springs.

For my 25th birthday, the two of us decided to have an adventure and explore Crystal River, FL – about 2 hours north of St. Petersbug. At 6am, we slithered into wetsuits and hit the water with our Captain.

In the winter, she told us, the manatees congregate in the rivers because the water is warmer than the Gulf. In the winter, there are 500-600 manatees stuffed like sardines in all of the river canals, eating, sleeping, floating, playing…. there are so many manatees, “you could walk across their backs.” We came at the end of the season when the manatees have moved back into the Gulf of Mexico but we still saw 18 of the gentle giants feasting on seagrass and floating lazily through the water!

Swimming face-t0-face with these animals was incredible. They were so focused on eating that we could get just inches from their faces and they would hardly notice we were there. The ones that weren’t eating would just float in the water, resting, sleeping – they are very lazy animals – which made for great photo opportunities.

The last stop on our snorkeling adventure was an area called Three Sisters Springs – 3 natural, underwater springs accessible only by swimming or kayak. The hanging moss and clear, turquoise-green water made this remote spot absolutely breathtaking.

Three Sisters Springs

At first, we snorkeled into the springs. We treaded water in place as we took in the view. This tropical lagoon was one of the most beautiful sites I have seen since snorkeling in Thailand. There were fish everywhere! Underwater, the sand was bright white and seagrass swayed with the currents. The springs looked like giant craters with fish hovering over the openings, relaxing in the warm bubbles. Fallen trees were suspended under the surface and as September swam over the springs to explore, I couldn’t believe how tiny she looked compared to the vast world underwater. Unfortunately, we don’t have a waterproof camera but trust us, it looks just as beautiful under water as it does above.

After our snorkeling tour, we rented kayaks from our hotel and paddled back to the springs to take more pictures. September took a nap on the kayak as I sat quietly and absorbed the scenery, quietly planning a future excursion back to this hidden oasis.

Crystal River made for a wonderful adventure! The manatees were gentle giants, the springs were beautiful and the getaway was relaxing. We’re already planning our next trip and we can’t wait to go back!

Transparent Kayaks

Ever wonder what you’re gliding over when you go kayaking? These special kayaks (and canoes) are made with the same materials as bullet proof glass and have completely transparent bottoms. Get a workout, enjoy the outdoors and observe the ecosystems below you as you paddle through the water. If we had an extra $2,500, we’d definitely get one of these!

Travel Tip Tuesdays are Back!

Travel Tip for today: Sightseeing

If you’re like us, then you probably enjoy visiting tourist sites every now and again. Whether it’s for the pictures, the experience or the bragging rights to say, “I’ve been there!”, tourist traps can be lots of fun – if only they didn’t have so many…. tourists! Here’s a tip: Go during lunch. Most tour companies (you know, those ones with the large groups of loud people all wearing the matching hats) will take a break from their touring for lunch and it will give you the perfect chance to see the site(s) up close or to snag the coveted photo op without everyone else in your way.

Happy sightseeing!

Travel Tip Tuesday!

Travel tip #11: One of the most important and most daunting parts of traveling is PACKING. What to pack, how much to pack, what not to pack… it can be overwhelming! Here are a few things to keep in mind that will help you make packing both easier and lighter:

  • Environment: What hemisphere are you visiting and what time of year is it? What are the average day/night temperatures for the time you’ll be there? Is it the rainy or dry season?
  • Culture: Are you a female and are you expected to dress modestly? If you’re planning on visiting temples or sacred sites, do your shoulders/arms need to be covered?
  • Activities: Are you attending a business conference or are you taking a beach getaway? Depending on what you’ll be doing on your trip will influence what you pack.
  • Space: Are you planning on staying in a hostel or on a train? Do you have your own villa or bungalow? If you don’t have a ton of space, pack less. When you’re sharing a small space with someone, you don’t want your belongings all over the place.
  • Weight: We always travel with our packs – that’s it. If it doesn’t fit in the pack, it doesn’t come on the trip. Obviously, the more stuff you pack, the more weight you’ll have to carry.
  • Buy it there: Don’t bother packing shampoo, soap, etc. because you’ll almost always be able to find that at your destination. Even sundresses can be purchased on the beaches in most places abroad – they’re inexpensive, too! So wait to get your sarong when you get to Thailand.
Best advice (particularly for backpackers or hostel-hoppers): Lay out everything you’d want to pack if you had all the space in the world. Then, take 1/3 of it.
Second best piece of advice: LAYER. Whether you’re traveling on a plane, train, boat, yak, etc. if you dress in layers, you can always remove excess clothing if you get too hot without compromising space in your pack. Getting pants that can unzip to yield shorts is a great way to go because you basically get 2 pieces of clothing for the space of 1! A lightweight shirt can be used a beach coverup, a dress shirt for dinner, a modest shirt when visiting temples and a lightweight shirt for your sunburn.
Happy packing!

10 places where you can escape world conflict

With the recent events in today’s media, escaping world conflict may not be such a bad idea. Below is a list of 10 countries you may want to plan a getaway to – they are (for the most part) free of world conflict and are great for relaxing:

  1. Switzerland – Seems like an amazing country to visit.
  2. Costa Rica – On our list already!
  3. Papua New Guinea – So much to explore!
  4. Canada – Hey neighbor!
  5. Seychelles – We’d run away here any day.
  6. Finland – Will definitely be a destination on our Euro trip someday.
  7. Tuvalu – One of the most remote places in the entire world!
  8. Iceland – Very cool and very intriguing.
  9. Bhutan – Happiness is said to be their Gross National Product. That by itself makes me happy.
  10. New Zealand – Beautiful environment and the Kiwis are supposed to be some of the nicest people on Earth. NZ is on our itinerary!

Tuvalu - extremely remote and fantastically serene
